TALENT DEFICIT – Boston-4 Canadiens-1 (Jan. 20, 2018)

Jan 20th, 2018 | By

You have to hand it to the Canadiens. Saturday night’s game against the Bruins was their second in 24 hours, their third game in four nights and their fifth in eight nights. And unlike in Boston on Wednesday, the Canadiens showed up and worked hard for sixty minutes.

TAKING ADVANTAGE – Canadiens-4 Washington-3 (Jan. 19, 2018)

Jan 20th, 2018 | By

We are warned “never to look a gift horse in the mouth” and for some reason the Friday night version of the Washington Capitals was “a gift horse” for the Canadiens. The Capitals were playing their second game in 24 hours coming off their five day break. Whatever the reason, the Friday night Capitals were a shadow of the team that whipped the Canadiens 6-1 in early October and the Canadiens are not going to give back the two points.

OUT TO LUNCH – Boston-4 Canadiens-1 (Jan. 17, 2018)

Jan 18th, 2018 | By

To start the game against the hottest team in the NHL on Wednesday night the Canadiens centremen were Jacob de la Rose, Paul Byron, Tomas Plekanec and Byron Froese. The most qualified member of that group was Plekanec and he went into the game with one goal in his last 28 games.

So could anyone expect any different result?

It started well. The Canadiens scored in the first minute. After that, mostly downhill.

Things started well – a goal in the first minute. Then it was mostly downhill with the exception of Carey Price who kept it pretty close until the third period.

….Prior to the 4-0 loss at Boston last February the Canadiens had won nine straight games at Boston dating back to Jan. 12 2012, the night the Canadiens traded Michael Cammalleri to Calgary mid game.

ANOTHER LOSER POINT – NY Islanders-5 Canadiens-4 (Overtime) Jan. 15, 2018

Jan 16th, 2018 | By

What we had out on Bell Centre ice Monday night was the NHL’s worst defensive team up against the 29th ranked offense. What could go wrong with that?

The worst defense in the league blew two two-goal leads and wound up in overtime while the NHL’s third worst offense produced 56 shots on goal and still couldn’t produce enough to win the game.

That’s the way it has been and will be with the 2017-2018 edition of the Canadiens.

ENTERTAINING LOSS – Boston-4 Canadiens-3 (shootout) Jan. 13, 2018

Jan 14th, 2018 | By

It’s another one in the loss column which was more than half expected considering the current state of the Canadiens compared with that of the Bruins who have been one of the league’s best teams over the last month and a half.

At least they weren’t boring and playing dull uninspiring hockey had been a team affliction until the game against Tampa ten days ago. Like the game against the Lightning, also decided in overtime, it was a matter of rising to the occasion. Some might more accurately say, playing over their heads. Win or lose, the paying customers at the Bell Centre were entertained after being forced to sit on their hands for most of the month of December.
