GAME #41 – PRICE SHUTS DOOR – Canadiens-2 Vancouver-0 (Jan. 3, 2019)

Jan 4th, 2019 | By

We’ve been heading for a game like this from Carey Price for over a month. Thursday night he put it all together and posted a 2-0 win, the 42nd shutout of his career and his first since he shut out Boston in the Canadiens 10th game of the season October 27th.

Making is first start in eleven days, Price made it look easy which is the way he goes when his game is at it’s best. There were few rebounds, no second chances. He handled the puck well and he was always in the right spot to make a tough save look routine. Price stopped 33 shots, twelve of them on the Vancouver power play. Twenty-eight of the Vancouver shots came in the final 40 minutes.

GAME #40 – NIEMI BOUNCES BACK – Canadiens-3 Dallas-2 (Overtime) Dec. 31, 2018

Jan 1st, 2019 | By

As bad porous as Antti Niemi was Saturday night at Tampa, he was close to air tight in Dallas. Quite a comeback from what was surely a depressing and soul searching night for the Canadiens backup. Sixteen high danger scoring chances among the 47 shots he faced in the game. A rebound goal on a power play put the Stars ahead in the second period but it was one of the few rebounds that got away from Niemi in this game, a marked change from Saturday night in Tampa when he was a rebound factory. Niemi was clearly the difference maker in Dallas. He closes out the road trip with wins in two of his three consecutive starts.

GAME #39 – LAST SHOT WINS – Tampa Bay-6 Canadiens-5 (Dec. 29, 2018)

Dec 30th, 2018 | By

The only ones who hate games like the 6-5 Tampa win over the Canadiens Saturday night are coaches, goaltenders and the losing team.

It was a terrific piece of entertainment decided literally on the game’s 70th and final shot on goal which broke the 5-5 tie with just over a minute left.

It was a terrific hockey game. A come-from-behind win against a Las Vegas team that hardly ever loses at home. The Canadiens came back three times before they won 4-3 in overtime.

The headliners were Phillip Danault who registered his first career hat trick and Paul Byron who won it in overtime.

By the midway point of the first period their legs started to go. Arizona dominated the final 50 minutes of the game, but in turn, Price dominated the the Coyotes stopping 36 of 37 shots.

GAME #35 – REBOUND FALLS SHORT – Colorado-2 Canadiens-1 (Dec. 19, 2018)

Dec 20th, 2018 | By

The Canadiens were in desperate need of a transfusion in Denver 48 hours after Monday night’s dreadful performance against the Bruins. They rebounded nicely but it wasn’t enough to survive the NHL’s highest scoring forward line.

GAME #34 – AN INEXPLICABLE LACK OF EMOTION – Boston-4 Canadiens-0 (Dec. 17, 2018)

Dec 18th, 2018 | By

Everything seemed right for the Canadiens against the Bruins Monday night. The Bruins were dealing with injuries to key players. They were in a minor slump and they were playing their second game in twenty-four hours.

All the Canadiens had to do was show up. And they didn’t. They were a well-beaten 4-0 losers. And with their win, the Bruins were able to move a point ahead of the Canadiens in the wild card race.

That’s entertainment!!

GAME #32 – BOUNCE BACK – Canadiens-6 Carolina-4 (Dec. 13, 2018)

Dec 14th, 2018 | By

There are a few ways one could take the Canadiens 6-4 win over Carolina Thursday night.

Importantly, it was a nice bounce-back from the 7-1 thrashing they suffered at Minnesota on Tuesday with a major contribution from the so-called secondary players.

On the other hand, despite a decided edge in shots on goal and territorial play the Canadiens could never get complete control over the comeback-minded Hurricanes which led to a tense but entertaining goal-filled third period.
