Is Kirk Muller a serious candidate to become head coach of the New Jersey Devils?  According to the Newark Star Ledger, his name is front and centre, but he’s not the only candidate.  Guy Carbonneau, Michel Therrien and Ken Hitchcock along with the coach of the Devils’ Lowell affiliate, John McLean are also mentioned in dispatches.  From today’s Star-Ledger

So what about Muller, who has been a Habs assistant coach the past four seasons?

Some suggest he’s too nice for the job. However, while his public personality is easy-going and friendly, behind closed doors and on the bench Muller is known as being very tough and demanding.

Many thought he was in line to become Canadiens head coach before Jacques Martin was hired, but Muller doesn’t speak French and that is a prerequisite for that job. Hamilton (AHL) coach Guy Boucher is the likely future coach in Montreal if he is not given a chance somewhere else.

The Devils have not yet asked permission to speak with Muller, who has another year remaining on his contract with the Canadiens. Insiders say he is anxious to get an opportunity to be an NHL head coach.

Muller was traded by Lamoriello and, at one time, they were at odds from a business standpoint. During the summer of 1991, Muller and Ken Daneyko were unsigned and held out from training camp.
