Alexei Emelin has been handed a one game suspension from the World Hockey Championships for spearing Sweden’s Johan Franzen. The spear came in the first period as Fransen was doing his thing in front of the Russian net, a sequence in which Fransen’s Detroit teammate Henrik Zetterberg scored. The spear followed a Fransen slash and a mild crosscheck on Emelin during the goalmouth scramble. At the time, Emelin was given a two minute minor for slashing.
Emelin will miss Sunday’s preliminary round game against the Czech Republic.
Sweden went on to beat Russia 7-3. Emelin scored one of Russia’s three goals, his first of the tournament.

Franzen’s goalmouth presence drew a lot of attention from the Russian defence. The IIHF Disciplinary Panel also suspended Dmitri Kalinin for three games following a cross-check on Franzén. He suffered a broken nose in the incident.
