In late August it was rumoured that Max Pacioretty had signed with Zug of the Swiss National League. That was proved to be false. It is now confirmed that the Canadiens left wing will join Ambri-Piotta for the duration of the NHL lockout.
The twin towns of Ambri and Piotta are located in the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland. Total population – 500. However, Ambri-Piotta has a long hockey history dating back to the formation of the team in 1937. Their arena holds 7,000 of which, in typical European fashion, 5,000 are standees. Through two homes games this season they’ve averaged 5600 fans.
The team is coached by former San Jose and Pittsburgh head coach Kevin Constantine.
Switzerland seems to be the destination-of-choice for North American born NHLer’s. The only teams in the twelve team Swiss National League that have not signed locked out players are Zurich Kloten Flyers, the Zurich Lions and Fribourg-Gottéron. still got no “lock-out players.”
