27 – Andrei Markov – Vityaz Chekhov

Andrei Markov, playing in his third game with the KHL’s Vityaz Chekhov, assisted on a power play goal that tied the game 2-2 against Spartak Wednesday night.  Vityaz went on to win the game 3-2 in a five round shootout.  The assist was his first point in the Chekhov uniform.

Markov’s ice time was 17:28 over 20 shifts.  He recorded one shot on goal.

In a post game interview Markov told,

“Any player must spend a few games to adapt to a new system. I do not see any difficulty.  Everything is fine, physically I feel good.   There is less physical play (than the NHL)and a larger ice surface  A player can pick up the puck in his own end and go through the whole field.”

Markov is wearing #27 for Vityaz.  79, his Canadiens number had already been reserved by defenseman Alexei Troshchinsky, the Vityaz captain.

The game was played before 3142 fans in Sokolniki Arena in Moscow, capacity 5,350.

41 year old former Canadiens draft pick Oleg Petrov assisted on one of the Spartak goals.  Eleven seasons ago Petrov scored 24 goals in a Canadiens uniform.

Saturday Vityaz will return home to Chekhov where they’ll host the Ukrainian team Donbass.

The other five members of the Canadiens in Europe were idle Wednesday.  In the Czech Extraliga, Tomas Kaberle and Tomas Plekanec will play Thursday at Pilsen.  All three, Yannick Weber, Raphael Diaz and Max Pacioretty (if he has recovered from the flu) will be playing in the Swiss National League Friday.

    Hi Ron,
It’s nice to hear that Oleg Petrov is still active and productive. With the arrival of Markov these two guys will surely be positive elements for the Vityaz and possibly increase fan interest.
