Vityaz Chekhov came from behind a 2-0 deficit to beat Kazakhstan-based Barys Astana 3-2 in a shootout Monday night before a home crowd of 2800 in the Moscow suburb of Chekhov. The good news from a Montreal standpoint, Andrei Markov continues to log major ice time, in this game 22:33 and 26 shifts through the overtime. Markov failed to record a point but had three shots on goal.
Former Canadiens prospects Nigel Dawes and Ryan McDonagh plus Tampa defenseman Victor Hedman all played for Astana without showing on the scoresheet.
………In the Swiss National League, Kevin Constantine has been fired as head coach of Ambri-Piotta after his team won only two of fourteen games. Constantine, who once coached Pittsburgh, New Jersey and San Jose in the NHL, drew more than a little attention for benching Max Pacioretty after only five games leading to his return to North America. He has been replaced by Montreal-born Serge Pelletier a long time member of the Swiss coaching ranks.
…..Former Canadien Sergei Kostitsyn has five goals and a shootout winner since joining Avangard Omsk six games ago. Reuters news agency Saturday re-wrote an interview Kostitsyn gave sport-express.ru Saturday after a win against Severstal in which he allegedly trashed the NHL, the city of Columbus and “North American mentality”. (Read the Reuters story here) As we found when he was in Montreal, Sergei is no choirboy. Still there seems to be some licence taken by Reuters in their handling of the translation of Kostitsyn’s comments. Here’s the original interview. (Google can supply one of their wonky translations if you want to go for it. And you can judge for yourself how “controversial” Kostitsyn really was.)
……By the way, Andre Kostitsyn is playing for Traktor Chelyabinsk (13GP – 6goals, 3assists) Even if there were a team interested in bringing him back to the NHL, end of lockout or not, as an NHL unrestricted free agent his contract calls for him to play the entire season with Traktor. Interesting to note that neither brother was interested in playing for their hometown team, Dynamo Minsk.
Ahead on the Schedule ……
