Andrei Markov finally found the scoresheet again with a goal and assist as Vityaz Chekhov scored a 5-3 win over Barys at the Kazakhstan capital of  Astana.   Markov was also handed a 4 minute “roughing” penalty in the final minute of the game that would have been a fighting major in the NHL to complete the so-called “Gordie Howe Hattrick”.

The offensive side of Markov’s game has been slow to return.  In a total of 12 games this season, interrupted by seven on the sidelines with a rib injury, Markov has just the goal and three assists.  In the game he logged 17:18 ice time.

The teams came to the game in a bad frame of mind.  Vityaz is noted for being the Broad Street Bullies of Russia since they came into the KHL in 1996.  Markov wound up with a four minute  fighting penalty along with Astana’s Maxim Spiridonov with 25 seconds remaining in the game.  I guess that means Markov doesn’t get  official credit for a “Gordie Howe Hattrick” but it was a pretty aggressive looking roughing penalty. Here it is.

Andrei Markov vs. Maxim Spiridonov Dec.3/2012

Two players who played briefly with the Canadiens two years ago, Dustin Boyd and Nigel Dawes are part of the Barys roster.  Boyd scored one of their goals.  .

The main event of the game was the scrap between  Vityaz tough guy Trevor Gillies and Jon Mirasty.  It  is not the first time these two have squared off.  They fought in A KHL game October 22nd.  The Saskatchewan born Mirasty played for Vityaz last season picking up 197 mostly-fighting penalty minutes.  Here’s the video Mirasty is in the blue jersey.
