Team Canada defeated Fribourg Switzerland 5-1 to earn a berth in Monday’s Spengler Cup against host  Davos.   David Desharnais assisted on the only goal for Fribourg.

In the other semi-final the host Davos team edged out Vitkovice Steelers of the Czech Extraliga 5-4.  Davos had picked up both Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz and forward Damian Brunner from Zug of the Swiss League for the tournament but neither was dressed for the game.

The SNL will resume it’s full schedule on Wednesday January 2nd.

In the Czech Extraliga, as expected Tomas Plekanec was not in the Kladno lineup in a 5-2 win at Zlin.   Plekanec suffered what was feared  to be a rib injury Friday night.  X-rays were negative but Plekanec opted to take the night off. We need only to look back at what was supposedly Andrei Markov’s co-called minor rib injury in late October. He missed seven games and thirty-three days when later examination found broken ribs.    In the Kladno victory Sunday Jaromir Jagr had four assists.   Kladno’s next game, with or without Plekanec, will be at home against Slavia Prague on Friday.

And Lars Eller picked up an assist on JYP Jyväskylä ‘s onlygoal in a 5-1 loss at Tampere Finland in the SM-liiga.  In 13 games Eller has five  goals and ten assists.   JYP will host KalPa Kuopio on Wednesday.

The teams of both Alexei Emelin and Andrei Markov were idle Sunday.  The KHL’s next scheduled games will be Thurday.    Emelin has been  missing from the Ak-Bars lineup the last two games for reasons unknown.

On to the  ECHL where the Alaska Aces will be looking for their eighth straight win when they play a New Year’s Eve game against Colorado at Anchorage.   Scott Gomez has missed the last two Alaska games with a lower body injury.  Gomez has missed ten of the Aces last seventeen games with various problems including one game missed because of food poisoning.
