Welcome to the future of the Canadiens.

The announcement was quietly made Monday morning through the Canadiens twitter account

Marc Bergevin and Michel Therrien notified Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk this morning that they will remain with the team.

No big deal?   Well …..actually it is a pretty big deal.
Galchenyuk becomes the first 18 year old to take a regular turn with the Canadiens since another first round draft choice,  Petr Svoboda started his seventeen year NHL career in 1984.
Galchenyuk will remain with the Canadiens for the rest of the season.  Because of the shortened NHL  season, the ten game tryout for junior players before they had to be returned to their teams was reduced to five.  Galchenyuk’s fifth game would have been Tuesday night’s game against Winnipeg.
Galchenyuk  left little doubt in anyone’s mind of his NHL talent after a two assist peformance against the Devils on Sunday night at the Bell Centre.   In his four games he has a goal and two assists and has shown improvement with each successive outing.  It is also clear that there would be little point, in terms of development, to returning him to Sarnia.

With bonuses, Galchenyuk will play the rest of the season at a pro-rated 3.225  million dollars as part of the first year of the  three year entry level contract he signed during the summer.  His contract calls for a basic 925 thousand dollars plus 2.3 million in potential bonus  money in each of the three years.

Gallagher was one of those late round Trevor Timmons  draft picks for which he is becoming famous.  He was taken in the  5th  round, 147th overall i 2010.  He went on to become the all-time leading goal- and point-scorer with the junior Vancouver Giants of the WHL and was part of the bronze medal Canadian World Junior team iin 2012.  He played only 36 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs before his invitation to the delayed Canadiens training camp.   Galchenyuk set him up for his first career NHL goal Sunday night against the Devils.

Off-Day Notes —

……..After  logging over 29 minutes in the game against New Jersey, Andrei Markov was given Monday morniing off from practice.

……..Michel Therrien kept his lines from Sunday night’s game intact meaning Eller with Desharnais and Cole; Gionta-Plekanec-Bourque; Galchenyuk-Gallagher-Prust  and  Moen-White-Armstrong.

……..Tomas Kaberle was back after missing a practice and a game after taking a puck in the face during practice last week.  The defence pairings -Weber (replacing Markov) with Emelin;Kaberle-Bouillon and Diaz-Gorges.

……..Finding apartments was the next order of business for Galchenyuk and Gallagher, who have been living in a hotel since the season started.  Gallagher will be moving in with Josh Gorges while we’re told Galchenyuk will share a Montreal apartment with his mother and sister.  His father remains in Sarnia as one of the Sting’s assistant coaches under Jacques Beaulieu, who is father to Canadiens defence prospect Nathan.
