Washington vs. Canadiens

Game Notes –

…..The Canadiens are  5-1-0 in their last six games outscoring their opponents 21-13.  Over the six games, special teams have been extraordinary. They are  6-for-17 on the power play (35.3 percent) and 16-for-17 on the penalty kill (94.1 percent).  They have killed off their last 14 shorthanded situations.

…..Going back further, the Canadiens have scored 9 goals in their last 26 power play opportunities – 34.6%.  Over the last nine games the Canadiens have allowed 2 power play goals in 24 shorthanded situations, a kill percentage of 92.3.

…..The Capitals have the number one power play in the league (25.5%) but rank 29th in penalty killing (75.7%)

…..Michal Neuvirth will make his second consecutive start in goal for the Capitals and only his fourth in the last 29 games.  He stopped 28 of 30 shots in a 4-2 against Tampa Sunday.  In seven career starts against the Canadiens, he is 4-2-0 with a .925 save% and a 2.16GAA.   Neuvirth was in goal for the Canadiens 4-2 win at Washington in January.

..Three different Capitals goaltenders, Michal Neuvirth, Tomas Vokoun and Braydon Holtby  have shared in a three game-plus Washington 216:32 shutout streak at the Bell Centre.  The last Canadiens home ice goal against Washington was scored by Andrei Kostitsyn on Holtby in the second period of a 4-2 loss March 15th 2011.

…..In Carey Price’s four appearances since he was pulled from the game in Boston March 27th, he has a 3-1-0 record with a  1.50GAA and a .947save%  and one shutout.  Price is 4-6-3 in 13 career appearances against Washington with a 2.95 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. He stopped 30 shots in the 4-1 Montreal win over Washington on January 24th.

…..Over the last 15 regular season meetings with the Canadiens, Washington is 11-3-2. The Capitals  swept all four games last season.

…..The Capitals  are 5-0-1 their last six trips to the Bell Centre.   The last time the Canadiens recorded a home ice win over the Capitals was February 10th 2010.  (6-5 in overtime). The Canadiens last regulation home win vs. Washington was Januiary 10th, 2009. (Sergei Kostitsyn game winner at 19:38 of third period in 5-4 win)  Only Plekanec, Gorges, Pacioretty, Markov and Bouillon remain from that night.

…..Over their last ten games the Capitals have scored 38 goals.  Alex Ovechkin has a points on half of them – 13 goals and 6 assists.

…..Washington started the season with a 2-8-1 record.  In the 28 games since they are 18-9-1.

…..The Capitals lead the weak Southeast Division.  Their record against Southeast division opponents is 12-3-0.  The Canadiens against the Southeast is 11-0-0.  Against the Atlantic and Northeast Washington is 8-14-2.

…..The Capitals over the last eleven games have not faced a team that ranks in the top six in the Eastern Conference.

..On February 27th Ovechkin, who had been moved from left to right wing by coach Adam Oates,  had 8 goals and 7 assists in 19 games.  In the 20 games since he has 17 goals, 11 assists for 28 points.  Ovechkin now shares the league lead in goals with 25 and is 6th in points.

…..The line of Ovechkin, Niklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson has 21 goals and 34 assists over the last 14 games.  Ovechkin has 16 of the goals.

…..Ovechkin, in his last four games against the Canadiens has one goal.

…..All ten of Michael Ryder’s Canadiens goals  have come in the last 12 games.

…..Max Pacioretty has never scored a goal against Washington.  In 12 career games he has six assists.

…..Andrei Markov is one of only seven to appear in all 38 games this season and leads the team in total ice time.  Who believed that would happen at the start of the season?   He has been a Capitals killer over the years.  In 33 games Markov has one goal, 18 assists and is plus-14.  11 of the assists have come on power plays.  He had a goal and assist against the Capitals back in January.

…..Despite missing 13 of 17 games between mid February and mid March with a groin injury, Mike Green leads NHL defencemen with 5 even strength goals.  He has five goals and an assist over his last four games.  P.K. Subban leads all defencemen overall with 10 goals.

…..P.K. Subban has one assist in eight career games against Washington.

…..The Capitals made one trade deadline deal acquiring winger Martin Erat from Nashville for highly regarded Swedish prospect Filip Forsberg (drafted 11th overall in 2012).   Erat suffered what appeared to be a left leg injury when he was hit into the boards by Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson in the first period of Saturday’s win over Florida and is out of the lineup indefinitely.

…..Mike Ribeiro will be making only his second appearance at the Bell Centre since the Habs traded him to Dallas for the washed up Janne Niinimaa and a fifth round draft pick.  He made his first appearance February 22nd last year, 5 ½ years after the trade.  He scored a goal and was first star in a 3-0 Dallas win.

…..The Canadiens have scored the first goal of the game a league leading 26 of 38 games.  In those games thjey are 19-4-3.

…. Only the Canadiens and Tampa Bay have failed to score a shorthanded goal this season.

…..In their respective careers, Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth  have combined to go 3-0-0 with a 1.17 GAA and a .955 save% at the Bell Centre.   They are 3-0-0/0.67/.973 in their last three in Montreal including two of the three consecutive shutouts.   They are  6-2-0/1.89/.931 against the Canadiens overall.
