Canadiens vs. New Jersey

Prudential Center – April 23, 20137:05pm

Game Notes

….Since the Canadioens clinched a playoff berth they are 1-4-0 allowing 25 goals.  Carey Price has allowed 19 of them.

…..Among the things that have gone wrong for the Canadiens over the last five games is penalty killing.  They have given up 8 goals in the last 28 times shorthanded – 71.4%.  In five games they have fallen from 13th in the league to 23rd.

…..Over the same five games, the Canadiens power play is 3-for-21 meaning special teams ratio was  minus-5.

…..The Canadiens have won five of the last six games at the PrudentialCenter.

…..The Devils were officially eliminated from the playoffs Sunday in a 4-1 loss to the Rangers.  The first time in six years they’ve missed the playoffs and only the second time in 16 years.  They were Stanley Cup finalists last year.

…..It’s the first time in six years that a Stanley Cup finalist failed to make the playoffs the following season; both the Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers missed the postseason in 2007 after playing for the Stanley Cup the year before.

…..The Devils played themselves out of the post season by losing 10 straight from March 25-April 15

…..Carey Price is 1-4-0 over his last 5 appearances and has a 5.45 goals-against average.  At New Jersey Price is 4-1-0 with a 1.61 GAA in his last five starts at the PrudentialCenter.

……Andrei Markov scored his first goal ever against New Jersey in overtime January 27th.  In 33 games against them he has 1 goal and 10 assists.

……Martin Brodeur will make his 16th straight start.  Over his last 13 he  has a 2.37 GAA  but is 2-7-4. The Devils went 3-8-2 when Brodeur sat out 13 in a row with a pinched nerve in his upper back/neck at the beginning of the season.

……Ilya Kovalchuk returned to the New Jersey lineup on Saturday for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury on March 23.  They were 1-6-4 in the 11 games he missed .

…….When both Kovalchuk and Brodeur were in the lineup the Devils record was 11-3-3 season and 6-15-7 with at least one of them sitting out.

……The Devils  have the worst goal scoring in the entire NHL (2.26 Goals/Game).

…..David Clarkson has five goals and 3 assists his last five games against the Canadiens.

….Adam Henrique will be a healthy scratch. He has one goal in his last 14 games.  Henrique was a finalist for the Calder Trophy last year.

…..Patrick Elias is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.  He scorfed two goals for the Devils for the 51st time in his career Saturday against Florida.  It was the first time since December 17, 2011 in Montreal that he had a two goal game.

…..Another career milestone for Brodeur.  Last week in Philadelphia his 3-0 win was his 300th regular season road win a first for NHL goaltenders.  Only two goaltenders have won has many as 200 on the road, Ed Belfour with 206 and Patrick Roy – 203.

…… New Jersey is now 4-17-6 when allowing the first goal. The Devils are 13-1-4 when scoring first this season.

……Goaltending has been an issue for the Devils, with  40 year old Martin Brodeur and 39 year old Johan Hedberg  combining for a .891 save percentage, the third-lowest in the NHL.
