The Canadiens liked enough of what they saw at last month’s development camp to give Swedish forward Erik Nystrom a 25-game Hamilton Bulldogs tryout contract. The 5’11” Nystrom was the Canadiens sixth round draft pick in 2012. For those unfamiliar with the process, a professional tryout contract or PTO exists only in the American Hockey League. A player can only be signed to a PTO twice per season. After the second time, the player is either signed to a Standard Player Contract, is a free agent. In other words, at the end of 25 games the Canadiens can either sign the 19 year old Nystrom to a contract or return him to his Swedish team for further development.
Stefan Chaput, a centre, was recalled from the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL in late November and stayed with the Bulldogs the remainder of the season scoring 5 goals and 17 points in 48 AHL games. He has a two-way AHL/ECHL contract. Chaput was originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes 153rd overall in 2006. Subsequently he played in the Anaheim and Boston organizations. The Canadiens originally signed him to a one-year AHL/ECHL contract last September.
Heading into next month’s training camp the Bulldogs have 25 players under various forms of contract including 16 forwards, six defensemen and four goaltenders. Twenty-one are signed to two-way NHL/AHL contracts, three under AHL/ECHL deals and Nystrom with his 25 game professional tryout.
