After dropping back to back games against the Toronto Marlies, the Hamilton Bulldogs wrapped up their brief exhibition season with a 1-0 win over the Utica Comets Thursday night. The game was played in Dundas Ontario.
Rookie Sven Andrighetto scored the game’s only goal at 3:57 of the second period, one-timing a pass from Nathan Beaulieu. Beaulieu had been returned to the Bulldogs after a brief Canadiens one-game call up earlier in the week.
Robert Mayer and Dustin Tokarski shared in the shutout, combining for 28 saves. The Bulldogs managed only 20 shots on Utica goaltender Joacim Eriksson.
Hamilton went 0-for-4 on the power play. Utica went 0-for-2.
Utica is a farm team of the Vancouver Canucks.
The Bulldogs will open their regular season Friday October 11th at Copps Coliseum against the St. John’s Ice Caps.
The Bulldogs have 29 players in camp including 19 forwards, eight defencemen and returning goaltenders Dustin Tokarski and Robert Mayer. Returning from last year are forwards Stefan Chaput, Mike Blunden, Louis Leblanc, Joonas Nattinen, Patrick Holland, Gabriel Dumont, Alex Belzile along with defencemen Greg Pateryn, Darren Dietz, Nathan Beaulieu and Morgan Ellis plus the goaltenders Tokarski and Mayer. Under two-way Canadiens/Hamilton contracts are veteran centres Nick Tarnasky (Last season AHL/Rochester) and Martin St. Pierre (AHL-Rockford) plus undrafted Halifax Mooseheads graduate Stefan Fournier and LW Christian Thomas (acquired from NY Rangers in return for Danny Kristo).
The Canadiens rookie draft choices looking to make the team are Erik Nystrom, Sven Andrighetto and defenceman Magnus Nygren.
Newcomers signed to AHL/ECHL contracts are D Joel Chouinard (Last season CHL/Denver), D Drew Schiestel (AHL/Rochester), LW Justin Courtnall (ECHL-South Carolina), plus undrafted junior graduates C Ben Duffy (PEI) and LW Stephen MacAulay (Halifax).
