The Hamilton Bulldogs trimmed four more players from their training camp roster Saturday bringing their roster closer to the required 23 player limit. Forwards Stefan Chaput and Stephen MacAulay have been assigned to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL while Jordan Owens and Alex Belzile have been released from professional try out contracts.
MacAulay, play with Saint John and then last year’s Memorial Cup champion Halifax Mooseheads, scored a season total of 31 goals and 62 points. He was undrafted and signed to a one year AHL/ECHL Hamilton contract in July. Chaput, a 25 year old centre, spent the final 48 games of last season after being called up from Wheeling. With Hamilton he had 5 goals and 12 assists.
Belzile was fairly productive for the Bulldogs after being called up from the ECHL in March but the Bulldogs would only offer a 2013 tryout contract. Owens, a 27 year old leftwinger, was trying out with the Bulldogs after spending last season playing in Haderslev Denmark .
The Bulldogs have 25 players in camp including 13 forwards, eight defencemen and returning goaltenders Dustin Tokarski and Robert Mayer. Still in camp are eleven from last season’s Hamilton roster including five forwards Mike Blunden, Louis Leblanc, Joonas Nattinen, Patrick Holland and Gabriel Dumont, along with defencemen Greg Pateryn, Darren Dietz, Nathan Beaulieu and Morgan Ellis plus the goaltenders Tokarski and Mayer. Under two-way Canadiens/Hamilton contracts are veteran centres Nick Tarnasky (Last season AHL/Rochester) and Martin St. Pierre (AHL-Rockford) plus undrafted Halifax Mooseheads graduate Stefan Fournier and LW Christian Thomas (acquired from NY Rangers in return for Danny Kristo).
The Canadiens rookie draft choices looking to make the team are Erik Nystrom (on a 25 game AHL tryout), Sven Andrighetto and defenceman Magnus Nygren.
Newcomers signed to AHL/ECHL contracts and still him Bulldogs camp are D Joel Chouinard (Last season CHL/Denver), D Drew Schiestel (AHL/Rochester), LW Justin Courtnall (ECHL-South Carolina), plus undrafted junior graduate and QMJHL scoring champion Ben Duffy (PEI). The Bulldogs are still taking a long look at Laval native Maxime Macenauer, a centre who played for AHL/St. John’s last season, Akim Aliu who played in the Calgary organization and 28 year old defenceman Nathan McIvor who played last year with Bridgeport/AHL. They are in camp on tryout contracts.
Hamilton will open it’s regular season at Friday October 11th at Copps Coliseum against the St. John’s Ice Caps.
