The defending Calder Cup champion Grand Rapids Griffins were forced to a shootout before they could edge the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-3 Saturday night. Hamilton right winger Akim Aliu scored with 10.1 seconds remaining and the Hamilton net empty to force overtime and eventually the shootout. Gustav Nyqvist scored the only goal of the shootout after both Sven Andrighetto and Aliu hit posts in their attempts.
The Griffins took advantage of a Hamilton team that played shorthanded nine times and gave up third period power play goals to Calle Jarnkrok and Jeff Hoggan. The other Grand Rapids goal was scored by Gustav Nyqvist who also had an assist, plus his shootout game winner.
For the Bulldogs, who led twice in the game it was Greg Pateryn, Sven Andrighetto and Aliu. Andrighetto, who was drafted by the Canadiens as an overage junior in June, also had an assist for his first two points as a professional. Pateryn also had an assist and now leads the Bulldogs with three points in two games. Pateryn and Patrick Holland were standouts in what was an excellent effort by the Bulldogs.
Robert Mayer was in goal for Hamilton. The Griffins outshot the Bulldogs 42-24. The announced crowd was 3,416. Grand Rapids is an affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings.
Forward Maxime Macenauer and defenceman Morgan Ellis were healthy scratches for the game. Right wingers Steve Quailer and Stefan Fournier are on the injury list and considered day-to-day. Forward Christian Thomas, acquired from the Rangers in return for Danny Kristo, continues to rehabilitate a training camp injury at the Canadiens Brossard facility, and is not yet part of the Hamilton roster.
