Game Notes

CANADIENS UPDATE – Rene Bourque out with upper body injury; George Parros and Douglas Murray – healthy scratches.  Peter Budaj in goal.

….The Canadiens are 6-0-1 their last seven games.

….At plus-13, the Canadiens have the best special teams differential in the league.  They have allowed 12 power play goals-against while scoring 25 (also the league lead).  Pittsburgh is second at plus 12 (12 PPGA vs. 24 PPGF)

…..On the road the Canadiens are number one in both power play and penalty killing – 29.8% on the PP (13 of 44) and away from home their penalty killers have given up only 3 goals in 37 shorthanded situations (91.9%).

…. Against the Canadiens Monday,the Devils allowed a power-play goal  for the first time since Nov. 20 at Anaheim They had been in a 17-for-17 stretch.

….Monday was the 11th straight game the Canadiens allowed two or fewer goals (8-1-2) and the eighth straight for goaltender Carey Price.   

….. The Devils rank 26th in the NHL scoring an average of just 2.18 goals per game

………..The Devils have allowed a total of 50 shots on goal over their last three games (17 vs. the Canadiens Monday; 15 vs. Buffalo Saturday; 18 vs. Carolina last Friday)

……The Devils defence has allowed a league-low average of 24.2 shots on goal per game and rank seventh with a 2.25 goals-against average.  Six of the 67 goals scored against them to date have been scored into their empty net; a league high.

…..On Monday, the Canadiens allowed a first period goal for only the 12th time in 28 games this season, fewest in the NHL.

…..David Desharnais, who had just one assist in his first 19 games now has two goals and six assists in his last seven games

…. Max Pacioretty now has eight goals in his last seven games. Against the Devils, he’s scored a goal in two straight games and three of his last four games against them.

…..Andrei Markov’s only career goal against the Devils was an overtime winner in a 2-1 victory at New Jersey on January 27th.  In 35 games vs. New Jersey he has one goal and 11 assists.

….With the Canadiens due to host Boston Thursday, Peter Budaj will start for the Canadiens.  He has never played against New Jersey.  It will be his seventh start of the season, all of them on the road.  His record is 4-1-1.

….Cory Schneider will make his first career start against the Canadiens –  He has a three game winning streak during which he has allowed three goals on 68 shots.  Prior to that he was 0-3-2 .  In his last five games Schneider is 3-1-1 with a 0.97 GAA, including a 1-0 win over Buffalo in his last start in Buffalo Saturday.

….The Devils have scored one or no goals in seven of Schneider‘s 12 stas this season which explains his losing 4-5-3 record despite ranking third in the league with a 1.72 GAA. .

….. The Devils and Canadiens split their two games in Newark last season.  The Devils won  the most recent game 3-2  April 23rd.

….. After starting out 0-4-3, the Devils climbed to a season-best one game over NHL .500 at 9-8-5 with their 2-1 overtime win in Los Angeles on Nov. 21.  That was followed by three losses in a row, then two wins, then Monday’s loss to the Canadiens which set they below .500 again.

…..Martin Brodeur has given up seven goals in his last two starts, and he’s lost four straight.
