The Lake Erie Monsters handed the Hamilton Bulldogs a 4-1 defeat Friday night in Cleveland in the first of a home and home weekend between the two clubs.
With the win the Monsters, an affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche jumped from third place to a tie for first place with Toronto in the highly competitive AHL North Division. The Bulldogs are fourth, but two points behind the leading Marlies and Monsters.
Colin Smith scored twice for the Monsters. The others were scored by Matt Hunwick and Joey Hishon. Three of their four goals came during Lake Erie power plays.
Maxime Macenauer scored the only goal for Hamilton late in the third period after Lake Erie had taken a 4-0 lead.
Shots on goal were 29-22 in favour of Lake Erie.
With the loss the Bulldogs record now stands at 10-10-3. The teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in Hamilton. Between times, they will play the Toronto Marlies at 5:00pm Saturday in Toronto.

…..This was the fifth of ten meetings between the clubs this season. Cleveland has a 2-1 edge in regulation victories and each team has a shootout win in the series.
…..Dustin Tokarski was in goal for Hamilton. Going into the game Tokarski was 2nd in the AHL in goals-against average at 2.06, tied for third in wins and fourth in save percentage at .930.

…..On Thursday, the Bulldogs recalled forward Ben Duffy from the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers and signed forward Zurevinski to a 25-game professional try out contract. In three games with Wheeling after being sent down by Hamilton November 29th Duffy had 2 goals and 1 assist
