lake erie IIThe Hamilton Bulldogs completed a weekend that included three games in less than 72 hours with a 6-2 win over the Lake Erie Monsters Sunday afternoon at Copps Coliseum.  The victory put Hamilton back into sole possession of first place in the AHL’s North Division with a 12-10-3 record.   They are third in the AHL Eastern Conference.

The Bulldogs broke open a close game with four third period goals, the first two  by Patrick Holland and Stefan Fournier 1:23 apart. Gabriel Dumont scored twice in the game.  Nick Tarnasky and Louis Leblanc scored the others.  For Lake Erie, an affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, it was team captain Brian Lerg and Marcus Lauridsen.

Along with his goal, Patrick Holland added two assists.  Holland missed nine games with an ankle injury.  In the four games since he returned to the lineup he has 3 goals and 4 assists.  Holland also had five shots on goal.

Robert Mayer was in goal for the second straight game.  Shots on goal were 30-28 in favour of Lake Erie.

The Bulldogs next game on the schedule will be at home against Toronto Friday.

Notes –

…..The Bulldogs have bounced back from a five game losing streak to win seven of their last ten games.

…..Team captain Martin St. Pierre assisted on each of the two power play goals scored by the Bulldogs.  Over the last seven games he has 3 goals and 8 assists and with 23 points, leads the Bulldogs in scoring by eight points over Louis Leblanc.

…..Former Canadiens first round draft pick Louis Leblanc recorded a goal and assist, ending a nine game goal drought.  In the 15 games since he was returned to the Bulldogs by the Canadiens November 6th, he has 3 goals.

…..Stefan Fournier‘s goal was his first as a professional.  The Dorval native also was involved in a vigorous fight with Lake Erie’s Daniel Maggio midway through the third period.  The undrafted Fournier signed an entry level three year contract with the Canadiens in July.  Mostly due to injury, he was playing in only his 11th Bulldogs game.

….Hamilton forward Mike Blunden picked up a rare triple minor penalty late in the second period.  He followed an initial cross checking penalty with a double minor for spearing.  The Monsters scored a goal on the first segment of the six minutes in penalties.

…It was a weekend for oddities.  In Saturday’s 2-1 win against Toronto the Bulldogs Nick Tarnasky was handed a double minor for butt-ending.

…Among the Hamilton scratches was RW-Christian Thomas who picked up a minor upper body injury late in Saturday’s game against Toronto.  Also out with injuries are C-Sven Andrighetto– (Lower body);  LW- Justin Courtnall (Upper body); RW-Steve Quailer (Upper body)      Healthy scratches included C-Ben Duffy; LW-Steven MacAulay; D-Drew Schiestel.

….With the injury to Thomas, Hamilton coach Sylvain Lefebvre elected to go with 11 forwards and seven defencemen for the game.
