Game Notes

……After going 9-0-1 the Canadiens have now lost two in a row.

……The Canadiens moved ahead of the Bruins in the Atlantic Division with their win over them nine days ago.  Since, they have fallen five points behind them for first place in the Atlantic Division.

……After scoring 32 goals during their 9-0-1 streak the Canadiens have scored once the last two games and went 140:57 without a goal before Alex Galchenyuk scored with 56 seconds remaining in Philadelphia.

…..Both of the Canadiens special teams, (power play & penalty killing) are ranked number one in the NHL on the road. Their power play has scored 13 goals on 48 chances on the road – 27.1%.  Their penalty killers have allowed on 3 goals in 42 shorthanded situations – 92.9%

……The Islanders ended a ten game losing streak (0-8-2) with a shootout win against San Jose Tuesday but on Thursday they were beaten 6-3 in Phoenix.  They have one win their last 12 games and have losts four straight at home.

…..The Islanders completed their western trip with a 1-4-0 record.

…..The Islanders have lost 11 of 12 and have given up at least four goals seven times in that stretch.

…..The Islanders scored three goals in regulation for the first time in ten games in the loss to Phoenix Thursday.

…..The Islanders have the worst penalty killing record in the NHL at 71.4 percent.  The Canadiens power play currently ranks 6th at 21.7%

…… Alex Galchenyuk is making his presence felt.  He is now third in team scoring with 21 points (9g/12a) through 33 games. Galchenyuk had a goal and two assists and a career high three points in the November game against the Islanders and was named the game’s first star.

…..Galchenyuk has points in four of his last six games including two game winning goals.   .

……Ryan Strome, the fifth player taken in the 2011 NHL Draft, will make his NHL debut. Strome was the scoring leader in the American Hockey League (23GP  9-24-33) at the time of his call-up this week.  He is coming off back-to-back AHL player of the week awards.  He is the last of the top ten picks in the class of 2011, headed by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Gabriel Landeskog, to play in the NHL.

…..Before losing his last two, Carey Price won seven straight starts with a 2.14 GAA. In his last six starts against the Islanders he is 4-1-1 with a 2.98 GAA.

…… Evgeni Nabokov is expected to start in goal for the first time in a month. .  He has been on injured reserve since he was sidelined with a groin injury November 16th.   hasn’t played since going down with a groin injury on Nov. 16.

……Nabokov against the Canadiens is 7-3-0 with a 2.86 GAA in 11 career starts.

……John Tavares has two goals and five assists during a four-game point streak against the Canadiens.  He assisted on both goals in November’s 4-2 loss at the Bell Centre.

….. The Islanders number one line has combined for 12 points in the last three games –John Tavares (2g/3a), Thomas Vanek (2g/2a) and Kyle Okposo (2g/1a).

…..Islander defenceman Andrew MacDonald leads the NHL with 110 blocked shots.
