BULLDOGS BENCHTwo goals in a twenty-three second span in the second period powered the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 5-1 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs Friday night in Wilkes-Barre.

With the Penguins leading 2-1, veteran Chuck Kobasew scored his first AHL goal of the season at 14:53.  Seconds later defenseman Brian Dumoulin scored to make it 4-1.   At that point, starting goaltender Devan Dubnyk was replaced in the Hamilton goal by Robert Mayer after surrendering the four goals on 14 shots.

In the first period Wilkes/Barre took a 2-0 lead on  a shorthanded penalty shot goal by Andrew Ebbett and a power play goal by Anton Zlobin.  Mike Blunden narrowed the score to 2-1 with his 14th of the season,  but that was the closest Hamilton would come.  Zlobin’s second goal of the game completed the scoring in the third period.

Total shots on goal were 27-19 in favour of the Bulldogs.

It was the Bulldogs fourth loss in a row and their second in six days against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Notes –

….Devan Dubnyk has started three of the four games since he joined Hamilton from the Nashville Predators.   He has given up ten goals including four in each of his last two games.  He made only two starts with Nashville in the six weeks since he was acquired from Edmonton in mid-January.

.It was finally reported this week that rookie defenseman Darren Dietz is out for the remainder of the season with a torn hamstring. Dietz suffered the injury February 21st in a game against Binghamton at the Bell Centre. Until Monday he had been listed as day-to-day.

..After being a healthy scratch last Sunday, team captain Martin St. Pierre was back in the lineup on a newly formed line with Gabriel Dumont and Mike Blunden.

.C-Jordan Owens was in the Hamilton lineup after being a healthy scratch for 14 games.  He was signed to a Bulldogs 25 game professional tryout contract in late November.

.Not dressed for this game, D-Nathan McIver, RW-Stefan Fournier and C-Robert Czarnik.

..This is the first of another 3-in-3 weekend for the Bulldogs who will play at Syracuse on Saturday and the Marlies at 3.00pm Sunday in Toronto. The three games are in a span of 44 hours.

..– Bulldogs defencemen Greg Pateryn and Morgan Ellis share the team lead in plus / minus at +7

..Like the the parent Canadiens, goalscoring has been the problem with Hamilton this season. Goals for per gameHamilton: 2.40 (T-28th) Power play Hamilton: 13.6% (29th)

..Leksands of the Swedish National League was eliminated from the playoffs Friday night which could mean Canadiens 2013 second round draft pick Jacob de la Rose is on his way to Hamilton to play the remainder of their AHL season.

.. Wilkes-Barre / Scranton captain and leading scorer Tom Kostopoulos spent two seasons with the Canadiens, from 2007-2009. In 145 games with the Habs, he recorded 35 points (15 goals, 20 assists) and 219 penalty minutes.
