Colorado vs. Canadiens

Bell Centre – March 18, 2014 – 7:35pm

Game Notes

.Since the Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche for the ’95-’96 season the Canadiens have a 4-12-4 record against them. At the Bell Centre the Canadiens are 3-4-2.

.Colorado has won four straight vs. the Canadiens including the last two appearances at the Bell Centre.  The Canadiens last beat them February 13 2009.  Jaroslav Halak stopped 46 of 48 shots.  It was the first and only Canadiens win at Denver since the team moved there from Quebec City.

…..The last time the Canadiens beat Colorado at the Bell Centre was an 8-5 victory October 21st 2006.

..….Both teams are in tight playoff races. The Habs are in a one-point three-way fight with Tampa and Toronto for the final two guaranteed Stanley Cup Playoff spots in the Atlantic Division.

..The Avalanche have a one-point lead on the Chicago Blackhawks for second place in the Central Division standings.

.The Avalanche have won their last four road games.

.Patrick Roy coaches his first game in Montreal.

.Colorado is the only NHL team Carey Price hasn’t beaten. He is 0-2-1 with a 3.61 GAA and .864 save percentage against them.

.Jean-Sebastien Giguere was also in goal in the November 2nd 4-1 Avalanche win at Denver.

.Vs. the Canadiens Giguere is 7-1-0 with a 2.26 goals-against average dating back to Dec. 10, 2005.    Over his career Giguere is 8-3-1 against the Canadiens with a 2.49 GAA

….The Canadiens win in Buffalo Sunday was their first in regulation time since they defeated Carolina February 8th (10 games).

.The Avalanche’s special teams have been particularly strong of late, going 4-for-10 on the power and 9-for-9 on the penalty kill over the past three games.

….The Canadiens power play has been going in the other direction.  The power play has 2 goals the last 27 opportunities, both with a two skater advantage.  Since early December, the Canadiens have had one of the worst power plays in the league, operating at 13%.

….Matt Duchene has multiple points in six of his last 11 games; 5 goals, 11 assists.

.Nathan MacKinnon leads the league rookies in goals (22), assists (30), points (52) and shots (195). His 13-game scoring streak this winter broke Wayne Gretzky‘s 34-year-old record for an 18-year-old NHLer.

.If as expected MacKinnon wins the Calder Trophy he will be the second Colorado winner in three years. Gabriel Landeskog won it in 2012.

.It is said that it takes five years to assess a team’s draft choices. In 2009 the Avalanche drafted forwards Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly Nos. 3 and 33, respectively, and defenseman Tyson Barrie was taken at No. 64.  The Canadiens have nothing from their 2009 draft on their roster right now, although Louis Leblanc, Gabriel Dumont and Joonas Nattinen have had brief tours with the team.
