Over the last 36 hours Josh Gorges, Daniel Brere and Brian Gionta officially became ex-Canadiens while they added forwards P.A. Parenteau, Manny Malhotra plus defensemen Tom Gilbert and Mike Weaver. And through it all, the Canadiens still have slightly more than 16 million dollars in cap space room with which to deal with the Lars Eller and P.K. Subban restricted free agent negotiations. If Subban and Eller take up as much as 12 million, the Canadiens still have some room make another move or two should they choose.
Up front P.A. Parenteau replaces Gionta and Manny Malhotra will fill the spot vacated by Briere and Ryan White on the fourth line.
There may be more deals in the works but looking at the Habs chart, the Canadiens still lack depth on their right wing, meaning at this point Moen and Prust will be asked to play their off wing at least until Sven Andrighetto, Patrick Holland or Christian Thomas are ready to arrive from Hamilton.

Bergevin’s reworking of the Canadiens defense was brilliant. It was clear the Canadiens spent too much time in their own end last season and they needed some puck moving help from their blueline. Bergevin also mentioned in his news conference that he felt that his two young left shooting defensemen Tinordi and Beaulieu needed to be given an opportunity. He traded Josh Gorges, a left shot, and his 3.9 million dollar contract to Buffalo and used that money to sign Tom Gilbert to a two year contract at 2.8 million and re-sign Mike Weaver at 1.75 million. Both of them are right shots.
Late in the day, the Canadiens added 34 year old Joey MacDonald to their goaltending depth with a two way one year contract. MacDonald spent last year bouncing between the Calgary Flames and their Abbotsford B.C farm club. He is destined for Hamilton. The Canadiens now have five goaltenders under contract; Carey Price, Peter Budaj, Dustin Tokarski, Mike Conlin and now MacDonald. This move gives the Canadiens some backup in Hamilton should the Canadiens decide to move Budaj or Tokarski.
Summing up his day’s work, Bergevin said, “(We signed) a right hand shot defenseman (allowing Emelin) to move to the left side. Bringing in a top nine player in Parenteau. Bringing a centreman (Malhotra) that can win faceoffs with some leadership. Bringing back Weaver. He’s really good on killing penalties and blocking shots. The term was right for us and for him. Those things we did today.”
