38-Nikita Scherbak – Named Star of Game

In the final of three intrasquad games, the Reds edged the Whites 2-1 before around 12,000 fans at the Bell Centre Monday night.  Hamilton Bulldogs winger Christian Thomas broke a 1-1 with just under eight minutes left in the game which was divided into two 25-minute halves.  Max Pacioretty scored the other goal for the Reds.  Alex Galchenyuk scored for the White squad.  The Whites held a 15-14 shots on goal edge.  In a fan vote, this year’s first round draft pick Nikita Scherbak was named the start of the game.

The Canadiens will begin their seven game exhibition season with a home game against the Boston Bruins Tuesday night.

Things to Consider –

….First Rule of Thumb  Never jump to conclusions five days into training camp.   The veteran players are taking their time putting their game together.  The rookies are struggling to make an impression.

….The Game’s Best  – Alex Galchenyuk.  We have been used to periodic displays of skill but nothing consistent.  On this night he gave us an outstanding play on almost every shift.  On his goal he took a pass from Scherbak and split Francis Bouillon and Joe Finley for a picture perfect goal.  If he can carry this through the exhibition season, it will be difficult to move him from centre on October 8th.

….Best Line – With all due respect to Desharnais/Pacioretty/Parenteau, the “Kids”, Galchenyuk/Scherbak/Gallagher stole the show.  In his post game news conference, Michel Therrien said he’s going to keep them together and see what develops.

….On Defense – None of the contenders, Beaulieu, Tinordi or Pateryn looked out of place in a game like this.

….Hard to IgnoreJiri Sekac once again demonstrated major league puck-handling and playmaking skills.  He played with Tomas Plekanec and Travis Moen in this game.

….Also Worth Noting

……….2013 first round draft choice Michael McCarron has been subject of a lot of negative scrutiny in camp so far.  He had a much better night. As Therrien said afterwards, “He’s still a long term project.”  ….. Christian Thomas’ speed also caught my eye.  The Canadiens traded Danny Kristo to the Rangers in order to get him.  He was hurt most of last year’s training camp and never got his season going.  He’s worth paying attention to.  ….Sven Andrighetto needs to gain some strength if he wants to play in the NHL.
