Colorado vs. Canadiens
Bell Centre – Oct. 18, 2014 – 7:15pm
Game Notes –
….The Canadiens are 4-1-0 to start the season. They last won five of the first six in 2008-09, going 5-0-1. That season they lost an overtime game in Buffalo to start the season and then won five in a row. Through their first ten games they were 8-1-1
….Colorado has dropped four of five to open this season (1-3-1) after starting 12-1-0 last season en route to the Central Division title.
….The Canadiens took on the Avalanche twice in the preseason, winning both games. The second game in Quebec City was notable because the Canadiens had only four regulars in their lineup against a veteran Colorado team. Dustin Tokarski solidified his hold on the backup goaltending position with that game.
….No. 1 goaltender Semyon Varlamov went on injured reserve (groin) the morning of Thursday’s game in Ottawa. Backup Reto Berra was hurt in the opening minutes of the game that night. before Thursday’s game in Ottawa, and they lost backup Reto Berra in the opening minutes of their 5-3 defeat. Varlamov won’t be available until Oct. 24 at the earliest, and Berra’s status is day-to-day.
….Both of the 22 year old Lake Erie (Cleveland) goaltenders are now with the Avalanche. Total NHL experience between them is three games.. Calvin Pickard, who finished the game in Ottawa Thursday, will get his first NHL start vs. the Canadiens. Sami Aittokallio has played one game with Colorado in each of the last two seasons.
….Only Florida has scored fewer goals per game than the Avalanche to start the season.
….Only two teams have given up more goals than the 3.6 per game that the Canadiens have allowed; New York Rangers and Edmonton.
….The Canadiens broke a four game losing streak against Colorado with a 6-3 win at the Bell Centre on March 18. Thomas Vanek scored three goals in the game.
….Prior to the March 18th win the last time the Canadiens recorded a home ice win over Colorado was 8-5 October 21st 2006.
….Since the Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995 the Canadiens are 5-12-4 against them. At the Bell Centre 4-4-2.
…..Carey Price is 1-2-1 against Colorado with a 3.47 goals-against average, his second-highest GAA versus any opponent behind a 3.71 versus Edmonton.
….Max Pacioretty has seven points (one goal, six assists) in six career games against Colorado. He assisted on two of Thomas Vanek’s three goals in the 6-3 Canadiens win March 18th.
….Nathan MacKinnon scored a goal in each of his two games against Montreal. He has only three assists so far this season.
… MacKinnon was the second Colorado Calder Trophy winner in three seasons. Gabriel Landeskog won it in 2012.
….Daniel Briere has just one goal and an assist in his first five starts. His lone goal was the 300th of his NHL career scored with less than a half second remaining in regulation time to give the Avalanche a win over Boston.
….It is said that it takes five years to assess the success or failure of an NHL draft. In 2009 the Avalanche drafted C-Matt Duchene (3rd overall), RW-Ryan O’Reilly (33rd) and D-Tyson Barrie (64th). The Canadiens have no players from that draft although Louis Leblanc, Gabriel Dumont and Joonas Nattinen made brief appearances.
