Led by two goals from Nicklas Jensen the Utica Comets edged the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 before 3,511 fans at the Memorial Auditiorium in Utica Wednesday night.
The game was only close because of the goaltending of Mike Condon who was making his third consecutive start in the Bulldogs. The first two periods spent almost entirely at the Hamilton end of the ice. Midway through the second period in a 1-1 game shots on goal were 24-12 in Utica’s favour.
Utica’s Alexandre Grenier opened the scoring at 10:00 of the first period but Hamilton quickly tied it up on a Magnus Nygren slapshot. Jensen scored goals in the second and third period to give Utica a 3-1 before Rene Bourque narrowed it on a 5-on-3 power play to close out the scoring.
The was the first of eight meetings against Utica, an affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. Final shots on goal were 30-21.
Notes –
….The loss ended a two game winning streak for the Bulldogs. They will face the Toronto Marlies twice this weekend, at home Friday night and again on Sunday afternoon at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.
….In the four games since he was assigned to Hamilton by the Canadiens, Rene Bourque has 2 goals and 2 assists. He has been playing on a line with T.J. Hensick and rookie Charles Hudon.
….In 8 appearances, Mike Condon now has a 3-4-1 record with a 2.62GAA and a .921 save%.
….LW-Jack Nevins and RW-Christian Thomas remain on the Bulldogs injury list. Healthy scratches were D-Bobby Shea and RW-Nick Sorkin.
….After 16 games the Bulldogs record is 6-8-2 for 14 points, 12 behind North Division leading Utica. The Comets also have the best record in the American Hockey League at 12-2-2. Other members of the AHL North Division are Adirondack, Rochester and Toronto who currently hold the Division cellar.
