Charles Hudon was terrific in the month of November. In his second month as a professional hockey player he scored five goals and nine assists and 14 points in 12 games. Three of his five goals were game winners including the overtime goal Saturday night against the Lake Erie Monsters. At the age of 20. he is the Hamilton Bulldogs leading scorer and the top rookie scorer in the AHL with 7 goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 20 games. Overall Hudon ranks 6th among the league’s scorers, but only two points behind the leader.
It may be a bit premature but Hudon may be another one of those late-round Trevor Timmins draft steals. Despite being named the QMJHL rookie of the year, he was taken in the fifth round (122nd) in 2012, probably because he was considered small at 5’10”. During the final stages of his junior career he was bothered by back and concussion problems. The back injury kept him out of the 2013 World Junior Tournament and last year, an early season concussion nearly prevented him from competing in the championship again. He recovered in time and scored a goal and two assists and was plus-5 in the tournament’s seven games.
One of the areas of Hudon’s game that has impressed scouts is his attention to minutiae. After a rating of plus-78 in 235 games in the QMJHL he is already a team-leading plus-9 as a member of the Bulldogs.
Hudon’s progress towards a role as a top-six NHL forward will depend mostly on how quickly he improves his core strength.
