The Florida Panthers Darcy Hordichuk is vowing to avenge the Travis Moen/Erik Gudbranson fight that took place in an exhibition game September 27th.

In the third period of the 6-2 win over the Panthers, Moen hit Panthers rightwinger Evgeny Dadinov from behind sending him headfirst into the boards. Gudbranson then jumped Moen and the linesmen moved in. Moen landed two punches while one of the linesmen had Gudbranson’s arms tied up.

Here’s the lunacy in this. First, Gudbranson is back in junior hockey after failing to come to contract terms with the Panthers. Secondly, at the time of the incident, Hordichuk was a member of the Vancouver Canucks. The Panthers acquired him in a trade for Andrew Peters on October 2nd

Hordichuk spoke of the incident during an interview with the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinal at practice in Brossard yesterday.

“I’ve heard about that.  I’m sure that will change.  We’ll see how he likes it when somebody gets in his face.  There wasn’t any need for that.  That’s why I’m here, to make sure stuff like that doesn’t happen.”

History tells us to chalk this up as so much “hot air”.

The 18-year-old Gudbranson, who was the third-overall pick in the June draft was left with cuts and a swollen left eye.

Panthers coach Peter DeBoer wasn’t happy at the time.

”I don’t know when it’s been all right for a veteran to get a young guy hurt, in a vulnerable position, and keep throwing punches.  It’s a play that doesn’t belong in hockey.”

Gudbranson also felt victim of a cheap shot.

”The refs hung me out to dry,” he said. ”I went after him. I wanted to fight him. I instigated it. It was a hockey fight, but the refs had me pinned to the boards and held my arm.  I could have done the same to him at the end. I could have broken his nose, but I chose not to.”

Here’s the video. Judge for yourself.

Moen was given a boarding minor, a fighting major and a game misconduct, while Gudbranson got a fighting major and a misconduct. Montreal’s Ryan White and Florida’s Mike Duco got fighting and game misconducts while the Panthers also took a bench minor for abuse of officials
