Veteran Nick Sorkin broke a 1-1 tie with just over seven minutes remaining and the Hamilton Bulldogs survived two subsequent Adirondack Flames power plays to squeeze out a 2-1 victory at Glens Falls Wednesday night. The win moved the Bulldogs into the eighth and final playoff position in the AHL’s Western Conference ahead of Toronto and Adirondack with ten games remaining on their schedule.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on a first period goal by T.J. Hensick but before the period was over the Flames Ben Hanowski tied it and it stayed tied until the Sorkin goal at 12:14 of the third.
Adirondack outshot the Bulldogs 30-26. Mike Condon was in goal for the Bulldogs.
…..The Bulldogs now have a season record of 31-25-10 for 72 points and eighth in the AHL West one point ahead of 9th place Toronto and two points ahead of 10th place Adirondack. Both Toronto and the Flames have two games in hand.
….The Bulldogs wind up the season series against Adirondack with a 3-3-2 record.
….The Bulldogs are the AHL’s top penalty killing team at 88.7%. Adirondack was 0 for 5 on their power play including a 5-on-3 opportunity for a full two minutes in the first period.
….The Hamilton injury list includes goaltender Joey MacDonald who returned to Hamilton for tests after a goalmouth collision in San Antonio last weekend. Also out with injuries are C Michael Bournival (dizziness); D Jarred Tinordi (upper body); D Davis Drewiske (wrist surgery); D Magnus Nygren (post-concussion syndrome).
….The win was Mike Condon‘s 20th of the season (20-15-5). He has a goals against average of 2.27 and a save percentage of .925 which ranks him fourth among AHL rookie goaltenders.
….Left wing Brandon McNally made his AHL debut under a professional tryout contract. McNally is a graduate of Dartmouth College and a free agent. He had 8 goals and 15 points with Dartmouth last season.
….Forward Sahir Gill‘s 25 game professional tryout contract has expired and he has been returned to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. In his 25 game tryout he scored 2 goals, 2 assists.
….During a second period fight with Bulldogs defenseman Bobby Shea Flames forward Turner Elson fell to the ice apparently hitting his head. He was removed on a stretcher and taken to Glens Falls Hospital. There is no further report.
….The eight game Hamilton road trip continues in Rochester Friday night followed by a game in Toronto against the Marlies on Saturday. So far on the road trip, which includes the shutout loss to Toronto at the Bell Centre, they are 3-2-1.
