With Thursday’s signing of Alex Galchenyuk, the work of Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin and his hockey department is done for the summer. August has traditionally become the NHL’s dead zone, the only time of the year where even the rumour mill runs all dry as general managers and their staffs take their August vacations.

Barring a catastrophe, expect the next hard news to come when training camps open in the third week of September.

That said, there have been few days off over the last two months for Bergevin and company. In the months of June and July, between the Canadiens and their St. John’s AHL franchise they executed 21 separate transactions, fourteen of them in July. We will have to take a wait-and-see approach for the rest..

Among the notable roster moves were the signing of unrestricted free agents Torrey Mitchell, Jeff Petry Brian Flynn and Alexander Semin plus restricted free agents Alex Galchenyuk, Greg Pateryn, Nathan Beaulieu and Michael Bournival. There was also the trade of Brandon Prust to Vancouver in return for Zack Kassian and the buyout of the remaining year of P.A. Parenteau’s contract.

In the end the Canadiens committed themselves to 49.5 million in contracts for their main roster, with Petry (33M) and Galchenyuk (5.6M) taking the lion’s share.  All of the Canadiens minor league restricted free agents received “show me” style one-year/two-way including forwards Christian Thomas, Michael Bournival and Gabriel Dumont plus defensemen Jarred Tinordi, Morgan Ellis and Mark Barberio.
