Only a day after he was sent back to the St. John’s IceCaps, the Canadiens traded left wing Christian Thomas to the Arizona Coyotes in return for forward Lucas Lessio.
The trade was announced Tuesday night just after the warmup before the IceCaps were to play the Albany Devils at Mile One Centre in St. John’s.
With the Coyotes Springfield Falcons affiliate Lessio had 7 goals and 5 assists in 24 games this season.
The 6’1″ Lessio was selected in the second round of the 2011 entry draft (56th overall) from the Oshawa Generals. In his first year as a professional he scored 29 goals and 54 points in 69 games but he has tailed off since them partly because of injuries. With the Coyotes Springfield affiliate he has 7 goals and 5 assists in 24 games this season.
He was called up to twice to the Coyotes playing 29 games with 2 goals and 3 assists.
Thomas was acquired from the Rangers in return for Canadiens 2008 second round draft choice Danny Kristo. The diminuitive Thomas has demonstrated excellent skating speed but never showed a consistent ability to produce consistent offense. In his recent five game callup he recorded two assists. Overall in 26 career NHL goals Thomas has produced 1 goal and 2 assists.
