1 albanyA three-goal second period propelled the St. John’s IceCaps to a 4-2 win over the Albany Friday night in the first of back-to-back games in Albany against the New Jersey Devils AHL affiliate.

With Albany leading 1-0 after one period of play, Morgan Ellis tied the game early in the second. It was the first of three goals scored in the span of forty seconds. Jim O’Brien scored his second goal of the game 18 seconds later but 12 seconds later Nikita Scherbak scored to tie the game at 2-2. Charles Hudon then scored the eventual game winner on a five-on-three power play at 7:48 of the period.

Sven Andrighetto scored the clinching goal on the only St. John’s of the third period.

Andrighetto had a goal and assist in the game. Gabriel Dumont recorded two assists.

Zach Fucale was in goal for St. John’s. Shots on goal were 26-17 in favour of Albany.

The teams will meet again Saturday afternoon at 2.00pm Eastern Time.

Notes

….St. John’s has points in three straight games (2-0-1). Their season record is now 18-14-9 and on the road 9-8-4.

…..The IceCaps were without newly acquired defenseman Victor Bartley who suffered a lower body injury in his first game with the team on Wednesday at Bridgeport. He has been flown to Montreal for treatment.

….Charles Hudon took a heavy hit midway through the third period and did not return to the game.

…..Andrighetto has 11 points in his last eight AHL games – 5 goals, 6 assists.

….After undergoing back surgery during Canadiens training camp, rookie defenseman Ryan Johnston made his professional debut Saturday vs. Toronto. He has an assist in each of his 3 professional games.

…..The goal by Morgan Ellis was his 10th of the season, second highest total among AHL defenseman behind the Toronto Marlies T.J. Brennan who has 15.

….Centre Michael McCarron has 0 goals and 3 assists in the ten game since he was returned to the IceCaps by the Canadiens on December 22nd.  Overall he has 13 goals and 27 points in 39 AHL games.

….The goal by former Canadiens first round draft pick Nikita Scherbak was only his second of his rookie season.  He returned to the St. John’s lineup Saturday against Toronto after missing 28 games following a heavy open ice hit from the Toronto Marlies Viktor Loov on Nov. 3rd.  In his 13 pro games he has 2 goals and 2 assists.

….Rookie goaltender Zach Fucale made his third consecutive start.  He has appeared in eight consecutive games.  Twice he relieved an ineffective Eddie Pasquale and on one occasion had to be relieved by Pasquale. His season record is 10-8-3 with a 3.12GAA and 903save%.
