icecaps sweater IIThe Portland Pirates defeated the St. John’s IceCaps 4-1 Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portlant Maine Wednesday night.

The Pirates held a 3-0 lead after two periods on goals by MacKenzie Weegar, Rocco Grimaldi and John MacFarland.  Nikita Scherbak scored the lone goal for the IceCaps.  Brett Olson scored the other Portland goal into an empty net.

Portland outshot St. John’s 38-27. Zach Fucale was in the nets for the IceCaps.

Notes –

….The goal by Scherbak was his second in four games since returning from an injury that kept him out of 28 games.

….Sven Andrighetto assisted on the Sherbak goal. He now has a four game points streak with 3 goals, 2 assists. He has 13 points over his last 10 AHL games including 6 goals.

….With Mark Barberio now on the roster of the Canadiens, defenseman Morgan Ellis has been named as his replacement at the AHL All-Star game. Ellis is second in goals among defensemen in the AHL with 10.

….Forward Jacob de la Rose was in the St. John’s lineup after being returned on Wednesday morning.  He will remain with the team through the NHL’s Al;l-Star game.

….Right wing Bud Holloway missed a fourth consecutive game and defenseman Victor Bartley missed a third straight game and is in Montreal being treated for an injury.

….This was the fourth of a six game IceCaps road trip. They will play at Portland again on Friday and wrap up the trip with a game at Hartford on Saturday.
