1 icecaps portlandThe annual four-game Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge turned out to be anything but a challenge for the Portland Pirates. The Florida Panthers completed a series sweep with a 4-2 win Friday night in Portland Maine.

Rocco Grimaldi led the Pirates with 2 goals with single goals going to Cameron Gaunce and Rob Schremp. For the IceCaps it was Bud Holloway and Mark MacMillan.

Portland had 35-29 shots on goal advantage. Eddie Pasquale was in goal for the IceCaps.

Notes –

….Bud Holloway returned to the lineup after missing four games with a lower body injury.

….Sven Andrighetto now has an active five game point scoring streak (3g, 3a). He has 14 points over his last eleven games (6g, 8a), a streak interrupted by his 3-game stint with the Canadiens January 2nd – 14th.

….The scoring slump of centre Michael McCarron continues.  In the 14 games since the Canadiens sent him back to St. John’s McCarron has 0 goals and 4 assists and is minus-3.  Friday in Portland he played on a line with Holloway and Lucas Lessio.

….Defenseman Victor Bartley has played in only two St. John’s periods after being acquired in the Jarred Tinordi trade with Arizona. He missed his fourth straight game and is undergoing treatment in Montreal.

….Forward John Scott was not in the lineup. He is in Nashville to take part in the festivities surrounding Sunday’s NHL All-Star game.

….The other healthy scratches were D Josiah Didier and C Jeremy Gregoire. Outside of Bartley, the only reported IceCaps injury is LW Connor Crisp (IR undisclosed)

….Thursday the Canadiens and IceCaps assigned defenseman Dalton Thrower to the ECHL Brampton Beast for the fourth time this season. Thrower was a second round draft choice (51st) of the Canadiens in 2012.

….For this game head coach Sylvain Lefebvre tried right wing Nikita Scherbak at centre between Andrighetto and Charles Hudon. Scherbak drew an assist on the final goal. The Canadiens 2014 first round draft choice has two goals and an assist in five games since his return from a November injury that kept him out of 28 games.

….Saturday’s game vs. Hartford will be the last before defenseman Morgan Ellis and  McCarron head for Syracuse and Monday’s AHL All-Star game. Ellis replaces Mark Barberio who is currently on the Canadiens roster.

….In the four game home-and-home Eimskip Challenge the IceCaps were outscored 17-5. The IceCaps, then a Winnipeg Affiliate, won the series 5 games to 4 last year against Portland who were connected to the Arizona Coyotes and were playing in the same AHL division.

….The IceCaps wrap up their six game road trip in Hartford on Saturday night. Through the first five games they are 2-2-1.

….St. John’s season record is 19-15-9 after 43 games leaving them in a tie for third place in the North Division with the Syracuse Crunch.
