1 st john's uitica 1The Utica Comets scored three goals on their first four shots on goal and made them stand up for a 5-2 win over the St. John’s IceCaps Friday at Mile One Centre.

Zach Fucale was pulled in favour of Eddie Pasquale after the third Utica goals which came at 5:16 of the first period.

The IceCaps narrowed the score to 3-1 on Bud Holloway’s power play goal late in the first period but the Comets opened it up to 5-1 before Jacob de la Rose’s late goal completed the scoring.

Notes –

….This was the IceCaps fourth loss in a row. Their record is now 19-18-9.

….The IceCaps wore special alternate jerseys to honour the Royal Newfoundland Regiment that is marking the 100th anniversary of the devastating World War One Battle of the Somme at Beaumont Hamel .

….NHL All-Star game hero John Scott is not expected in St. John’s for the weekend series. His wife gave berth to twin girls Friday.

….Defenseman Victor Bartley played in his second game for the IceCaps. After being acquired from Arizona in the Tinordi trade, Bartley was hurt in his St. John’s debut and missed five games.  He played on the top defense pairing with Morgan Ellis.

….The IceCaps were also without the services of forwards Michael Bournival and Markus Eisenschmid both of whom were injured on the team’s recent road trip.

….Because of injuries and the Canadiens callups of Daniel Carr, Lucas Lessio and Sven Andrighetto, the IceCaps were forced to make a number of roster moves over the preceding two days. They signed centre Shane Bakker to a professional tryout contract; brought back forwards Angelo Miceli, Brandon McNally and Tim Bozon plus defenceman Dalton Thrower from ECHL Brampton. They also signed right wing Alexandre Ranger to a professional tryout contract. Ranger was with ECHL Norfolk. Only Bakker and Thrower were not dressed for the game.

….For the third straight game Nikita Scherbak, normally a right wing, was tried at centre; between Bud Holloway and Charles Hudon for this game.

….Hudon assisted on the Holloway goal and now has five points his last six games (2g,3a).

….Michael McCarron failed to score in his 16th consecutive game. Since being returned to St. John’s by the Canadiens after Christmas he has 0 goals and 4 assists.
