1 icecaps dumont IIUtica Comets forward Brendan Gaunce scored with 1.28 remaining in regulation time to tie the game and then scored five seconds into overtime to give the Utica Comets a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the St. John’s IceCaps at Mile One Centre in St. John’s. The win gave the Comets a weekend two-game sweep of St. John’s.

Gabriel Dumont broke a 1-1 deadlock midway through the final period to give the IceCaps the lead. Just prior to giving up the tieing goal the IceCaps had successfully killed off a Utica 5-on-3 power play.

Dumont also had an assist in the game. Jacob de la Rose also scored for St. John’s. Jon Landry had the other goal for Utica.

St. John’s held a 34-29 on goal advantage in the game. Eddie Pasquale was in the IceCaps nets.

Notes –

….The IceCaps continue a six game homestand against Syracuse Tuesday and Wednesday.

….The IceCaps record is now 19-18-10. This was the 14th time they were forced into overtime this season. They are now in fifth place in the AHL North Division, two points behind Utica, who currently hold down the final playoff berth.

….Since the holiday break St. John’s is 5-11-3.

….The have managed more than two goals in only 5 of their last 19 games.

….Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin was in St. John’s to watch the weekend series against Utica.

….Centre Michael McCarron, now mired in a 17 game goalscoring drought, was moved from centre to right wing on a line with C Gabriel Dumont and LW Jacob de la Rose. He picked up an assist on the de la Rose goal.  Over the seventeen game goal drought he has five assists.

….Nikita Scherbak, a first round draft choice of the Canadiens as a right wing, played his fourth straight game at centre, again between Charles Hudon and Bud Holloway.

….Forwards Markus Eisenschmid and Michael Bournival remained out with injuries.  Forwards Sven Andrighetto, Lucas Lessio and Daniel Carr remain with the Canadiens – Carr and Lessio are now on Canadiens injury reserve.

….The IceCaps fourth line was made up of wingers Alexandre Ranger and Shayne Bakker both making their debut on Professional Tryout Contracts and centre Anthony Miceli who was recently recalled from Brampton ECHL.
