1 FUCALEZach Fucale’s season in professional hockey can be described as erratic. On Friday the 20 year old rookie was pulled after letting in three goals on the first four Utica shots in a 5-2 loss. Tuesday night he stopped 39 shots, including 14 in the third period, in a 4-0 win over the Syracuse Crunch at Mile One Centre in St. John’s.

It was Fucale’s first professional shutout and the first of the season for a St. John’s goaltender.

Captain Gabriel Dumont led the IceCaps with a goal and two assists. Linemate Bud Holloway had three assists. Defenseman Morgan Ellis had a goal and an assist. Michael McCarron ended a 17 game goalless streak with his 14th goal of the season on a second period power play. Nikita Scherbak scored the other St. John’s goal.

Final shots on goal favoured Syracuse 39-19.

The teams will meet again Wednesay night at St. John’s.

Notes

….The win ended a five game IceCaps losing streak. Their season record is 20-18-10. They are tied with Rochester for fourth place in the AHL North with a .521 win percentage.

.Michael McCarron hadn’t scored since December 16th when he registered a hattrick against Albany.

….The goal by Scherbak, which turned out to be the game winner, was his fourth of a rookie season which has included two stints on the injury list. He missed six games early in the season, came back for a game and then missed another 22. Scherbak centred an IceCaps line for the fourth straight game.

….Scherbak centred a line with Charles Hudon and Holloway.  McCarron was with wingers Dumont and Jacob de la Rose.

….The IceCaps had only two third period shots; both of them wound up in the net.
