Charles Hudon’s goal at 1:45 of overtime gave the St. John’s IceCaps a 4-3 win over the Syracuse Crunch Wednesday night at Mile One Arena in St. John’s. The win was the second in two nights against Syracuse, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Hudon also drew an assist on the power play goal by Nikita Scherbak at the five minute mark of the third period tied the game at 3-3. All of the IceCaps goals were scored on their power play. Victor Bartley and Mark MacMillan gave them a 2-0 first period lead but before the period was over Slater Koekkoek ad Dylan Blujus and tied the game. Andrew Yogan scored in the second period to tive the Crunch a 3-2 lead and pave the way for the St. John’s comeback.
For the second consecutrive game IceCaps goaltender Zach Fucale faced 39 Syracuse shots. Tuesday night he recorded his first professional shutout. He stopped 36 of the 39 in this game.
….This was the 16th time this season the IceCaps were forced into overtime. They are 6-10 in overtime or shootouts. Overall their record is now 21-18-10 and in fourth place in the AHL’s North Division
….The IceCaps were without forward Jacob de la Rose who was called up to the Canadiens before gametime. De la Rose is the fourth member of IceCaps on callup to the parent club, joining Sven Andrighetto plus Daniel Carr and Lucas Lessio who are now on Canadiens injury reserve.
….NHL All-Star game hero John Scott remains in Michigan with his wife and newly born twin girls. He is expected back in St. John’s in time for the weekend series against the Marlies. Scott played in four IceCaps games after being acquired along with Victor Bartley in the Jarred Tinordi trade.
….The goal by Bartley was his first with St. John’s.
….Forwards Michael Bournival and Markus Eisenschmid remain on the St. John’s injury list.
…..Nikita Scherbak centred Hudon and Bud Holloway. It was the fifth consecutive game Scherbak was used at centre. He has a goal in each of his last two games. Scherbak has missed 28 games in his rookie season because of two separate injuries.
….With the back-to-back wins the 20-year old Fucale now is 12-11-3 with a .904 save percentage and 3.14 goals against average.
….With a goal and assist, Hudon how has 3 goals and 4 assists his last eight games.
….Bud Holloway was held off the scoresheet but has nine points over his last nine games (4g, 5a)
….The St. John’s power play has been ranked in the bottom half of the league most of the season, but it produced three in this game and was five for eight in the two game Syracuse series.
….The IceCaps will host the Toronto Marlies Saturday and Sunday before heading out on another six game road trip.
