1 cometsMax Friberg’s goal at 1:19 of overtime gave the St. John’s IceCaps a 2-1 win over the Utica Comets Friday night in the first game of a seven game road trip.

St. John’s forward Jeremy Gregoire scored on the IceCaps second shot of the game at 2:35 of the first period and goaltender Zach Fucale held the Comets off until midway through the third period when Carter Bancks tied it. Fucale was particularly good in a third period in which the IceCaps were outshot 14-5.  Final shots on goal were 31-21 in Utica’s favour.

….This was the 18th time in 61 games, the IceCaps were forced to play in overtime.  Their season record is 28-25-8 for 67 points.

….The win allowed the IceCaps to close to within four points of the Comets who hold down third place in the AHL’s North Division.  But Utica has three games in hand.  The Rochester Americans are two points behind the IceCaps, but also hold three games in hand.

…Under current AHL rules the top four teams in each division make the playoffs.  However, there are eight teams in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and seven in the North Division.  If the fifth place team in the Atlantic Division has a better record than the fourth place team in the North, they bump that team out.  As things stand now, Portland is in position to bump the North Division’s fourth place team.

….The IceCaps continue their seven game road trip in Syracuse with games Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.

….The undermanned IceCaps have four players on their roster under tryout contracts, Alexandre Ranger,  Andrew Yogan and Shane Bakker who are under Professional Tryouts and defenseman Chris Joyaux, a graduate of Miami of Ohio University who signed a 25 game amateur tryout contract on Wednesday.   Centre Cory Ward who just finished his college career at Bemidji State University was signed to an amateur contract Friday and will join the team in Syracuse Saturday.
