Led by two goals from Josh Leivo and a four point game from defenseman T.J. Brennan, the Toronto Marlies drove another nail in the St. John’s IceCaps hopes for a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs with a 5-3 win Saturday afternoon at the Air Canada Centre.
The Marlies scored three goals on the Marlies first 13 shots on a shaky Zach Fucale and the undermanned IceCaps could generate little offense to come back through the final two periods. Shots on goal in the game were 40-18.
Also scoring for Toronto were Brennan who had a goal and three assists, Brendan Leipsic and Colin Smith.
For the IceCaps it was Charles Hudon, Bud Holloway and Brett Lernout. Hudon also had an assist and Nikita Scherbak recorded two assists.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 15,234 at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.
The IceCaps will wrap up their seven game road trip in Toronto on Tuesday night before returning home to St. John’s for the final six games of their schedule.
Notes –
…The IceCaps are now 12th in the AHL’s 15 team Eastern Conference with a record of 29-29-11. They have lost four of their last five games and with seven games remaining in their schedule are six points behind the Portland Pirates who now have the final playoff berth in the East. Going into Saturday night’s game against Springfield, Portland has four games in hand over them.
….If the IceCaps fail to make the playoffs it will be the fifth consecutive season the Canadiens AHL affiliate has missed competing for the Calder Cup.
…Charles Hudon has six goals and an assist in his last four games. He now leads the IceCaps with 26 goals.
…Nikita Scherbak has five assists his last five games.
…On Friday the Canadiens announced the signing of defenseman Tom Parisi to a 25-game Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO). Paris1 played four seasons with Providence College. Earlier in the day he agreed to a two-year/two way contact with the Canadiens that commences in July. Parisi took part in the Canadiens Development Camp last summer.
….Parisi makes the third US College player now with the IceCaps on a 25-game ATO including centre Cory Ward (Bemidji State University) and defenseman Chris Joyaux (Miami-Ohio).
