The Hartford Wolfpack handed the St. John’s IceCaps a 4-1 defeat Friday night at Mile One Centre in St. John’s. It leaves the Canadiens top farm team with one game remaining in their season, the fifth in a row in which it has failed to make the Calder Cup playoffs.
Jayson Megna led the New York Rangers affiliate with a goal and two assists. Also scoring for the Wolfpack were Niklas Jensen, Chris Summers and Chad Nehring. Adam Tambellini posted three assists.
Mike McCarron scored the lone IceCaps goal, his 17th of a season in which he has had two stints with the parent Canadiens.
Shots on goal favoured the Wolfpack 27-22. Zach Fucale was in goal for St. John’s.
Notes-
….The loss guaranteed the IceCaps will finish the season below .550. With one game left they are 31-33-11. Only one other Canadiens AHL affiliate has finished with fewer AHL wins in the last fourteen years.
….Sylvain Lefebvre has been head coach of the Canadiens top farm team for four years. They have failed to make the playoffs each time and have been over .500 once.
….The Canadiens and IceCaps gave goaltender Ben Scrivens permission to return to his off season home earlier in the week. Scrivens will become an unrestricted free agent on July first. After clearing waivers and returning to St. John’s he was in one IceCaps game, a 4-0 loss at Lehigh Valley Paril 2nd.
….With an assist on McCarron’s power play goal, Bud Holloway equaled best North American point total of 61 when he scored 28 goals and 33 assists with the Manchester Monarchs in 2011-12. He is sixth in AHL scoring with 19 goals and 42 assists in 68 games.
….In his bid for his first 30 goals professional season, Charles Hudon was held off the scoresheet and remains at 28. He was credited with 4 shots on goal. Hudon has 8 goals, 2 assists his last nine games.
….In his first season of professional hockey, along with two callups to the Canadiens, Mike McCarron has 17 goals and 38 points in 56 AHL games. In 20 games with the Canadiens he had a goal and assist.
….Eight players who played in games with the Canadiens this season were in the IceCaps lineup including forwards McCarron, Holloway, Hudon and Jacob de la Rose plus defensemen Darren Dietz, Joel Hanley, Morgan Ellis and Ryan Johnston. A total of 20 players played games for both the IceCaps and Canadiens this season.
….Junior graduates and former Canadiens draft choices Daniel Audette (Sherbrooke Phoenix) and Jeremiah Addison (Ottawa 67’s) played in their second professional games. Audette was drafted in the 4th round in 2014; Addison in the 7th round of 2015.
….The teams will meet against Saturday at Mile One Centre. The final game of the season for the IceCaps.
….Hartford is in a struggle with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the final Eastern Conference Calder Cup playoff berth.
