WELL BEATEN – Washington-6 Canadiens-1 (Oct. 7, 2017)

Oct 8th, 2017 | By | Category: Canadiens, Canadiens Game Story, Latest News

So, how do you lke them so far?

Two games into the season; two uninspired performances.

Against Buffalo, the Canadiens put in one period and an overtime and came away with their shootout win. Versus Washington they were buried before the game was four minutes old.

We’ve known since the early stages of training camp that the defense was going to cause fans to tear their hair. Warning bells sounded when Marc Bergevin indicated that the holes in his defense created by the departure of Markov, Emelin and to some extent Beaulieu would have to be be taken care of by “committee”. So far the “committee” is disfunctional.

OVER COACHING?

For reasons only he can answer, Claude Julien decided to take Victor Mete away from Shea Weber despite the fact that together they were only effective defense pairing. I suspect that Julien was trying to balance the “committee” by putting his two best defensemen with two of the worst early season performers, Mark Streit and Jordie Benn. Needless to say, it didn’t work. Mete logged almost 15 of his 16:39 with Streit. Benn played with Weber through the first period before Julien gave up on that idea with the Canadiens down 4-0. After that Weber played with Karl Alzner and Benn paired up with Jeff Petry.

And who knows what is going on with Petry these days?

THE STRUGGLE

Julien has some decisions to make before the Canadiens take on the Rangers Sunday night in New York. For different reasons, Streit and Benn have had major issues. No real surprise in Streit. The Canadiens signed him despite the fact that he was a healthy scratch through most of the Penguins march to the Stanley Cup in the spring. He’s 39 years old and shows it.

Benn is a different situation. He was successful as a third pairing defenseman last season. Now he’s being asked to log tougher minutes and they may be above his talent level.

Joe Morrow, Brandon Davidson and maybe David Schlemko are waiting in the wings. Might be a good idea to make a change or two in New York.

IN THE SAME BOAT

The forward group doesn’t get off the hook on this one. They were simply not ready to play. The Plekanec line started the game and twenty seconds into it, Ovechkin scored the first of his four goals. Plekanec/Hudon/Lehkonen recovered and again were the Canadiens best. Alex Galchenyuk continues to be an enegma. Alex Hemsky is becoming the king of bad peaalties.

And we’re still looking for offense from the group. In the second and third period with Washington’s foot off the gas the Canadiens outshot them 32-10 and only came up with Brendan Gallagher’s shorthand goal.  In two games the Canadiens have piled up 84 shots and have three goals, two of them shorthanded.

PRICE

Every goaltender has his soft spot. For instance, Ken Dryden couldn’t win a game in Los Angeles. For Carey Price it seems to be Washington.

In his ten years in the league Price has been in 22 games against the Capitals and won only six of them while carrying a sub .00 save percentage.   While he was victimized by a couple of deflections in the first period, he also seemed to be aflicted with the same early-game malaise that affected his teammates.

MOVING ON

Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. The completion of the first of 14 sets of back to back games this season.. It will also be the third game in four nights. A win and much of what happened in Washington will be forotten. A loss and fans panic will reign.

  1. Bay_Bye says:

Streit was disastrous and Benn has played awful all through pre-season…now for the 1st 4 goals…Benn was the cause for the 1st goal by not covering his man.. the 2nd goal was caused by Weber just standing around and doing nothing.the 3rd was also due to Weber trying to go down on the shot but he was too slow so only got in Carey’s way…Weber looked some slow last night,is he starting to slow down..the 4th goal was because Azner tried covering Ovie but did not tie up Ovie’s most dangerous part..his stick…this defense sucks bad but where is all the offense we are suppose to have..we are not going to win many games scoring 1 or 2 goals in this league…going to be a long season
