SAME OLD……. Carolina-3 Canadiens-1 (Dec. 27, 2017)

Dec 27th, 2017 | By | Category: Canadiens, Canadiens Game Story, Latest News

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Ultimately it was the story of the 3-1 loss at Carolina. After a dreadful first period that could be chalked up to the post Christmas travel schedule.’ the Canadiens were good enough to win the game, except……

Except they can’t score goals.

Even if you have the best goaltender in the world you can’t expect a 2-1 win every night.

SLIP SLIDIN’ AWAY

With Boston winning easily Wednesday night, the Canadiens now are chasing Toronto and not the Bruins who moved into third place in the Atlantic Division. So it’s Toronto in the division and the Canadiens are nine points behind them. If they want a playoff spot they’re to have to catch the Metropolitan Islanders who are eight points ahead of them. Does anyone believe the Canadiens are capable of playing the 15 games over .500 they would need to produce the 29-15-1 record they would need to reach the much discussed 95 point Eastern Conference playoff cutoff.

IF ONLY…

There was a time when Max Pacioretty would have buried that shorthanded scoring chance midway through the first period but, then was then.

He has now gone ten games without a goal and has one in the last 19. Once again he missed the net more than forced the goaltender to make a save.

Sum total of his night was two shots on goal.

UP AND DOWN

….I liked Alex Galchenyuk in this game except of course those two penalties the second of which cost the Canadiens the game. He’s more involved and is beginning to look like someone who has found his comfort zone at left wing.

….Replacing Byron Froese with Charles Hudon raised a few eyebrows but remember Hudon was originally drafted as a centre by the Canadiens . He was moved to left wing by Sylvain Lefebvre at the AHL level a couple of years ago.  I thought he had a pretty good night which included four shots on goal.

….I thought Brett Lernout had a better night than his season debut in Edmonton, but that is an awfully low bar.

….As for the rest of the defense it was another one of those chaotice nights.

….Karl Alzner’s giveaway led to the opening goal and and the second goal was a power play dog’s breakfast with Joe Morrow running all over the place and with his back to the play as Sebastian Aho scored on on Price’s second rebound.

…Obviously Price deserved better.  The Canadiens could have been down 3-0 12 minutes inot the game with the Hurricanes oushooting the Canadiens 10-1.

….Obviously Carey Price deserved better. Canadiens could have been down 3-0 12 minutes into the game with the Hurricanes outshooting the Canadiens 10-1.

MOVING ON

About the worst thing that can happen is to be facing the Tampa Bay Lightning on the road in the second game in 24 hours. The Lightning are now 18 points ahead of the Canadiens are one of those teams we’ll be looking at as a Stanley Cup contender while the Canadiens are on the golf course.

the sad thing is why were Benn,Morrow and Pacs on when they pulled the goalie….you want someone who can score and they had none. It is like there is nothing Pacs can do wrong that will decrease his value in important situations…he should not be there when they need a goal…where were Chucky and Gally..on the bench.. Did Drouin play last night..i don;t remember seeing him… when in Tampa they will see what they gave up in Sergechev….will be a wake up call
