UPDATE; Alex Auld has drawn the start against the Calgary Flames tonight. It will be his first appearance at the Bell Centre since the exhibition season. With back to back games twice this week and four games in six nights, it’s possible that Auld could get a second start on the weekend when the Canadiens play in Ottawa and at home against Anaheim Friday and Saturday.
In six appearances and five starts this season, Auld has a 3-2-0 record with a 1.74 goals-against average and a save percentage of .941.
Auld made three Bell Centre starts during the exhibition season, the last one a 5-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on September 30th. On that night he faced 37 shots.
the flu bug has hit the Canadiens. Newcomer James Wisniewski and Benoit Pouliot were sent home from practice this morning and are not likely to be available tonight. If not, Tom Pyatt and Alexandre Picard will come down from the press box. Pyatt will start the game on a line with David Desharnais and Mathieu Darche and Picard will work with Yannick Weber. At least that’s the way they lined up this morning.
(Original Post) We are about to start the Canadiens fourth four-game week of the season.
This one is a little different than the others in that it features back-to-back games twice; Calgary at home and then at Buffalo Monday-Tuesday, followed by a game in Ottawa Friday and Anaheim at the Bell Centre Saturday.
That means we’ll see Alex Auld make his 6th and maybe even his 7th start of the season in the Canadiens nets.
There is some speculation that Jacques Martin might put Auld in Monday night against the struggling Flames and use Price in the intradivisional game against the Sabres on Tuesday.
If he does, it will be contrary to his well established pattern. All five of Auld’s starts have been on the road. Three of them have been during the other four-game weeks and all of them have been either on the front or back end of two games in two nights situations.
It’s always dangerous to make predictions, especially when you’re dealing with the mood swings of a coaching staff, but the guess here is, Price start both the Calgary and Buffalo games, Auld will play in Ottawa (against his former team) Friday and Price will be back in the nets Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks.
