Tomas Plekanec scored twice as defending the World Champion Czech Republic defeated Germany 5-2 in the final game of the tournament’s Qualifying round.  The Czech move into the quarterfinals with a perfect 6-0 record.  Plekanec scored four goals and one assist in his five game since arriving in Slovakia after the Canadiens were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.  Plekanec’ linemate Jaromir Jagr collected three assists against the Germans.  The Czechs will play the United States in the quarterfinal round, as the tournament turns to sudden-death elimination.

At the same time, Canada finished undefeated after a 3-2 win over Sweden.  They will meet the struggling Russian team in the quarterfinal.  Two of the six Team Canada wins came in overtime.
