The Canadiens added a total of seven players to their protected list this weekend, five of them defensemen.

Friday night they made Saint John Sea Dogs defenceman Nathan Beaulieu their first choice, seventeenth overall.

In the second stage of the draft, the Canadiens were without a second round pick and traded away their third round choice (78th) to Winnipeg to re-acquire the third round pick they gave up in the Brent Sopel deal with Atlanta in February plus Winnipeg’s regular fourth round choice (97th and 108th overall)

Second & Third Round – No Selection.

Fourth Round (97th overall)   Defenceman Josiah Didier from Cedar Rapids of the USHL.  A Denver Colorado native,  has committed to play college hockey at Denver University. Didier is 6’3” 200 pounds.

Fourth Round (108th)   Olivier Archambault  Left Wing.  From Val D’Or of the QMJHL.  He’s 5’11” – 175lbs.  Last season he scored 20 goals and 33 assists.  For what it’s worth, Archambault was the first player taken in the QMJHL midget draft two years ago.  Good skater.  Small but very strong.  Immature personality.  Clashed with his coach in Val D’Or and was traded to Drummondville at the end of the season.

Fourth Round (113th)    Magnus Nygren   Defenceman.  Farjestads of the Swedish Elite league.  21 years old.  The 6’1” 190 lb. Nygren is reportedly a skilled, mobile player with a right shot.  A power play specialist with above average hockey sense.  Pick acquired from Anaheim in 2009 trade for Kyle Chipchura.  Pierre Gauthier’s assessment “He’s three years older than the others in the draft, but he played for a team that won the Swedish league title and he played on the first defence pair and the power play, so he has a certain level of talent.”

Fifth Round (138th)  Darren Dietz – Defenceman  – Saskatoon Blades WHL.  6’1”  193 lbs.  Slow developer who started to emerge this past season.  Undrafted walk-on two years ago.  Finally became a regular last season.  Right hand shot.

Seventh Round (198th)Colin Sullivan.  Defenceman.  Avon Old Farms Connecticut.  6’1” 196 pounds.  Outstanding skater.  Committed to Yale University in 2012-13 season.
