Among the week’s loose ends: Alexei Emelin was a key part of Russia’s undefeated march to the World Hockey Championship. EMELIN SCORES WINNER – Russia to Semi-Finals at Worlds

Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin broke a 2-2 tie early in the third period as Russia defeated Norway 5-2 in the quarterfinal game at the World hockey championship in Stockholm Sweden. In other quarterfinal games Canada lost to Slovakia, the Czech Republic edged Sweden and Finland eliminated the United States.

Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin has been handed a one game suspension for spearing Johan Fransen during Saturday’s game World Championship preliminary round game between Sweden and Russia Friday. Sweden defeated Russia 7-3. Watch the video.

The Canadiens. led by Tomas Plekanec, will have six players participating in the World hockey championships starting next weekend at Stockholm and Helskinki. Plekanec will be representing the Czech Republic for the fifth time.

Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges are the anchors of a defense that broke in two rookies last year – Alexei Emelin and Raphael Diaz last season. P.K. Josh Gorges was named winner of the Jacques Beauchamp Trophy as the Canadiens player who played a dominant role without winning any other major honour. It’s the second time he’s won the award. Roman Hamrlik, now a member of the Washington Capitals, won the award last season. David Desharanais was the second choice, Alexei Emelin third.

In an eventful day at the Canadiens Brossard training centre. Brian Gionta probably will return to the Canadiens lineup tomafter missing eleven games. Alexei Emelin in hit in the face with a Yannick Weber slapshot, in the same area where he suffered a serious injury when he was playing the KHL. Krys Barch of Florida Panthers gets a slap on the wrist for what, in the end, were very mild comments directed at the Canadiens P.K. Subban. And the NHL players association says “no” to league re-alignment.

GOMEZ SKATES – Kostitsyn Leaves Monday Practice

Scott Gomez practiced with his teammates this morning for the first time in almost three weeks although he has not been cleared for any physical contact. At the same time, Andrei Kostitsyn left practice with an undisclosed injury. Gomez will not play tomorrow against Edmonton but will accompany the team to Phoenix and Nashville later in the week. Kostitsyn’s injury is in the process of being evaluated.
